Rectangular Table Size Guide

When planning your dining room table, one of the most important decisions is the size. At the end of this post, I will give some recommendations for table sizes based on number of people.

How much room does a person need?

Let’s start with one person and her dining space. A typical place setting requires about 15” in depth and the average shoulder width of a person is between 15” and 19”. If you will use chairs you should consider 24” per person, if you will use a bench, then you could probably get away with 20” per person.

What about a Common Area?

If you want to have a shared area to use for serving dishes like platters or serving boards, then you should plan on adding 6” to 10” to the overall depth of the table.

How much space left around my table?

No matter what size your table, we recommend at least 2' between any edge of the table and the nearest obstruction (wall, window, other furniture). So at a minimum, to figure out the required space for a table, you should add 4’ to both the length and width of a table. So for example, a table measuring 6’ x 3' requires 10’ x 7’ of space at a minimum. This allows people to pull a chair or bench back to take a seat. Remember that these are minimums. If you want to be able to walk around comfortable around a seated dining table, we recommend a clearance of 3’ on each side. So if you have the space, you would add 6’ to both the length and width of your dining table. So for example, a table measuring 6’ x 3’ ideally requires 12’ x 6’ of space.
